Ceramics
The specialization in ceramics allows students to work with clay and ceramics, one of the most ancient and universal materials and media in human civilization. The specialization comprises courses exploring the relationship between material and media, their artistic potential, and relevant discourses. Although the courses are interrelated, they can be taken independently. A knowledge of the technical, conceptual, and discourse in ceramics practice is essential for this specialization. Technical knowledge includes how to process and shape clay and ceramic materials. Conceptual knowledge is the comprehension of the potentiality of artistic and aesthetic materials and media. On the other hand, discourse knowledge refers to a range of issues and contexts related to ceramics practice, such as making, the duality of matter and mind, ephemerality, and the truth of the material. It also incorporates other disciplinary perspectives that are relevant to ceramics practices, particularly material culture, anthropology, popular culture, and phenomenology. All of this knowledge is an integral element of the creative art-making abilities that lead to producing works. These abilities are the foundation for conducting artistic research within an academic setting.
